Kamaluddin Nilu (A.M. Kamaluddin), born 1955, is the Chief Advisor of Centre for Asian Theatre (CAT). He has also been Associate Professor (1994-2000) and Assistant Professor (1985-1994) of Dramatic Arts, Department of Fine Arts, Chittagong University. He has a diploma (1981) in Dramatic Arts from National School of Drama (NSD) in New Delhi and is also B.A. Honours & Master of Arts in Sociology from Dhaka University. 
 
Kamaluddin Nilu is highly experienced as theatre director and has directed around 35 plays which have been produced by CAT, National Academy of Performing Arts (Shilpakala Academy), Bangladesh as well as by various theatre groups in Bangladesh and abroad. Kamaluddin Nilu’s directorial work has over the years become increasingly experimental with blending of modern and traditional forms, techniques and devices which for most productions also imply extensive use of colour symbolism and widely known metaphors as well as a combination of dialogue, music, and movement. He is widely known as an unconventional interpreter of Ibsen’s plays. His directorial work covers a wide range of plays, from classical Sanskrit and Western plays through plays by Shakespeare, Molière, Brecht and Heiner Muller to plays written by Tagore and contemporary western playwrights. 
 
Kamaluddin Nilu has in recent years increasingly also involved himself in community theatre and is a pioneer in Bangladesh in theatre for children. Many of his theatre productions have also been staged in India, Japan, Taiwan, Sweden and England.   

His recent directorial works are Henrik Ibsen's Brand, Thomas Bernhard's Immanuel Kant, Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis and Sonai Bibir Pala a play based on East Bengal's ballad.
 
Kamaluddin Nilu is also an experienced actor, although directorial work has occupied an increasing share of his time. From 1978 onwards, he has acted the main character in four stage plays, ten TV serials, a number of TV and radio plays and four feature films. His latest stage performance is in The Lesson (2001).
 
He also wrote the script and directed the television film Journey into the Night (2001), and is the director of the video film Silent Departure (2002). 
 
He has received awards several times as a best theatre director and actor.
 
In the capacity of Secretary General of CAT, Kamaluddin Nilu has been the convenor of the major four international conferences organised by CAT. He has also given master classes at international theatre festivals and has presented papers at several international conferences, including the Chiayi Art Festival on Tropic of Cancer, Taiwan 2005, the 9th International Ibsen Conference and conferences organised by International Federation of Theatre Research (IFTR) Kamaluddin Nilu has conducted numerous workshops in Bangladesh and abroad on direction, acting, and performance analysis.
