During
the inauguration of the International Ibsen Conference and Festivals on
11 May, two theatre personalities with international reputation from
Asia and Europe will be honoured with Ibsen Awards for their substantial
contribution to theatre, notably Ibrahim AlKazi (India) and
Terje Mærli (Norway). |

Ebrahim Alkazi has had a long and distinguished career in
the fields of theatre, contemporary Indian art and the preservation of
India's cultural heritage.
From 1962 to 1977 Mr. Alkazi was Director of the National School of
Drama and Asian Theatre Institute, New Delhi, which he developed unto an
institution of international repute.
He is also closely associated with the modern art movement in India
and has curated and presented more than 150 art exhibitions at the Art
Heritage Gallery in New Delhi.
In 1982, he curated a series of exhibitions and events at the Museum of
Modern Art in Oxford, in collaboration with David Elliot, then the
director.
In the 1980s, in association with Dr. Mildred Archer, then at the India
Office Library, he published a series of five books exploring India's
encounter with the West: The Passionate Quest; Visions of India;
Between Battles; The Tranquil Eye and The Marquis Wellesley
Collection.
For his contribution to the field of art and culture Mr. Alkazi has
received the highest national awards in India, including the Padma
Bhushan and the Padma Shri.

Terje Mærli was born in Oslo, Norway in 1940. He has an outstanding career
within theatre in Norway as well as abroad and is in particular renowned
as director of Henrik Ibsen’s plays. Terje Mærli studied direction at
the Norwegian Theatre Academy and is also a graduate from University of
Oslo with Literature, French and Nordic languages as subjects. His debut
as a stage director took place in 1970, and 1972 marked his debut as a
dramatist.
Terje Mærli has in total made around 100 productions for the stage,
including 32 productions of 16 different plays by Ibsen. Mærli has
directed Ibsen plays for theatres in Denmark, Germany, Japan, Norway and
Sweden, and he has visited China, Denmark, England, Russia and Sweden
with his productions. Four of his Ibsen productions have been performed
in the Theatre Biennial in Sweden. Through his career, he has also made
18 theatre productions for television in Denmark, Japan and Norway. As a
dramatist, Mr. Mærli has written plays for the stage as well as for
television.
Mr.
Mærli was Artistic Director of Trøndelag Teater, one of the major
regional theatres in Norway, from 1992 to 1997.
Terje Mærli has been honoured with prestigious awards in Norway,
including the Amanda Award for best television production twice and the
Theatre Critics’ Award. He has also received the Scandinavian National
Theatre award.
