In
view of focusing on different subjects, history of theatre, theatre
movement, theatre studies, theatre techniques, theatre as a
profession, theatre as a tool of community development and above all
different productions, Centre for Asian Theatre (CAT) has published
a good number of books, booklets, pamphlets, posters, proceedings of
different programmes and calendar as a whole.
CAT's
publications unit works as an income generating cell of this
organisation. CAT earns money through the sale of its publications
all the year round. In
addition, CAT publishes and sells different books and booklet on
different social development issues and produces audios and
films.
Ibsen's
Brand
CAT published Ibsen's Brand (a verse play), Bengali
version with an Introduction and Annotations by Munzur-i-Mowla in
May 2005. Kaiyum Chowdhury designed the cover
of this book. This publication is on sale and available at different
bookshops in Dhaka and CAT Publication Cell.
Putuler
Itikatha
CAT published Putuler Itikatha (a play) by
Kamaluddin Nilu, Bengali translation of Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's
House in December 2003. Ashraful Haque Mukul designed the cover
of this book. This publication is on sale and available at different
bookshops in Dhaka and CAT Publication Cell.
Tarpor?
Ekhono Swapna
CAT published a book titled Tarpor? Ekhono Swapna,
compilation of two street theatres Tarpor? (The Next) written
by Naila Azad and Ekhono Swapna (Dreams Yet) written by
Debashish Ghosh in April 2004. Kamaluddin Nilu carried out the responsibilities
regarding this publication as editor. Ahsan Reza Khan designed
the jacket of the book using an art-work by Kiriti Bishwas. This
book is available at CAT Publication Cell.
Ibsen Biography
Centre for Asian Theatre (CAT) has recently published a biography of
Henrik Ibsen, the world famous Norwegian playwright. Author of the
book is Prof. Ali Anwar, English Department, Rajshahi University.
Experts commenting on the biography opined that the Ibsen biography
can be regarded as an important book since this is the first of its
kind in Bangla language, and since it has authentic descriptions of
the various events in the life-time of Henrik Ibsen and his works.
Calendar 1999
CAT published a calendar of 1999 under its Research, Documentation and Publication component, covering the expenses from its own fund. The topic for CAT Calendar 1999 was Painters and Performing Arts. The calendar was illustrated with twelve paintings made by twelve world famous artists who were influenced by some of the outstanding playwrights and subsequently became directly engaged in theatre practice.
‘Bhelua Sundari’ audio cassette
CAT released the audio cassette on its play-production Bhelua Sundari in the year 2000. The cassette has been released in view of the increased interest of the general audience in Bangladesh and in West Bengal of India.
Uttoradhikar
CAT published a book titled Uttoradhikar with the scripts of the four play-productions produced and staged by CAT for the students at the primary and high school levels.
‘Shushamo’, A Picture Book for Children
In 1998, Centre for Asian Theatre (CAT) published Shushamo, a picture book to educate children and their parents about gender equity. Shushamo is designed with the elements of nature as metaphors so that it can easily have an impact on the mind of children and their parents to act against discrimination of women and girls. The text and the drawings of the picture book are made by Naima Haque.
‘Nabojiboner Gaan’ by Kalim Sharafi
In 1998, CAT released Nabojiboner Gaan, an audio cassette of songs voiced by Kalim Sharafi, an outstanding singer of the Indian subcontinent. The cassette release ceremony of “Nabojiboner Gaan” took place at the British Council auditorium on 3 April 1998. The function was inaugurated by Dr. Nilima Ibrahim. Begum Matia Chowdhury, Honourable Minister to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, People’s Republic of Bangladesh, was present at the function as Chief Guest. Dr. Nilima Ibrahim, on behalf of Centre for Asian Theatre, offered special honour to Kalim Sharafi. Discussants on the occasion were Professor Serajul Islam Chowdhury, Poet Shamsur Rahman, Actor Syed Hassan Imam and Poet Nirmalendu Guun.
The theme of the songs of “Nabojiboner Gaan”, a superb creation of Jyotirindra Maitra, is the serious famine in Bengal of 1943. We believe that “Nabojiboner Gaan” will remain as an important documentary of the history of the grimy famine in Bengal in 1943.
CAT Calendar 1998
CAT published a Calendar for the year 1998 with portraits of contemporary six theatre directors and six playwrights of Bangladesh. The aim was to contribute to documentation of the contemporary Bangladeshi theatre. The portraits were drawn by Shishir Bhattacharjee.
Krishnabibar
CAT published the production script of Krishnabibar, an adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s Ghosts, adapted by Ahmed Reza and directed by Kamaluddin
Nilu.
