Ellida Wangel
is the daughter of a lighthouse keeper who marries the widower Dr.
Wangel. Gradually this couple drifts apart after their son dies as
an infant. Ellida fears this is a punishment because she feels that
she betrayed her first love. She is pulled into the dream about him
and becomes isolated from her husband and his two daughters. One day
this man is back, and he wants her to go away with him.
