In order to
build the skills of people involved in theatre activities regarding
different theatrical techniques, Centre for Asian Theatre (CAT)
organises a number of training programmes and workshops. In
this regard, CAT got involved a good number of national and
international reputed theatre scholars to conduct the training
programmes. Thus, CAT contributes to establish theatre as a
professional sector. These are as follows:
Light Design
Workshop 2005
Centre for Asian Theatre in collaboration with Goethe-Institut Dhaka
organises a workshop on light design from 10 February to 03 March 2005. Ms.
Annette ter Meulen, a renowned light designer from Germany conducts the workshop as
course director. The workshop creates an opportunity for light designers of Bangladesh to
understand and enrich their knowledge on light design and modern light equipments.
This workshop follows the production Franz Kafka's The
Metamorphosis.
Theatre Training for Street Children
CAT organised a three-month long training programme for street children under the auspices of Mother Luisa at Bashundhara, Dhaka. This programme was conducted by Mejrema Reuter, theatre director of UK, during the period January-March 2002. Ten CAT performers underwent the training programme.
Theatre Therapy Training
The training programme on “Theatre Therapy” was carried out jointly with CRP for the period January-March 2002. Theatre therapy is meant for the handicapped children, which was conducted by Mejrema Reuter, theatre director of UK. Fifteen CAT performers took part in the training and developed their skill in theatre therapy by undergoing the training and manipulated their skills in rendering physical betterment of the handicapped children.
Training on Environmental Theatre
The CAT performers participated in a ten-day long training programme on Environmental Theatre organised by the British Council, Dhaka in the month of August 2001. Nine CAT performers took part in the training programme. Conducted by Ms. Mejrema Reuter, the training programme ended with a theatre production on environmental issues, acted by the CAT actors and actresses.
Training on “Voice and Movement”
A two-day long training programme on “Voice and Movement” took place at the Centre for Asian Theatre (CAT) on 26 and 27 January 2002. Conducted by Naila Azad, Department of Theatre, University of California, Los Angeles, USA, the training programme was aimed at developing the skill of the CAT performers to perform in theatrical productions for development.
Workshop on Voice and Speech
A 7-days workshop on Voice and Speech was organised by Centre for Asian Theatre (CAT) in February 2001. The workshop was conducted by Mejrema Reuter, a theatre Director of England.
Workshop on Body Language
A month-long workshop on Body Language, conducted by Ruth Lerche, Denmark, was by Centre for Asian Theatre (CAT) in January 2001.
Workshop on ‘Advanced Light Design’
CAT, with support from the Royal Norwegian Embassy, Dhaka, organised the ‘Advanced Light Design Workshop’ in Dhaka during the period 1–5 September 2000. Participated by 15 light designers of the country, the workshop was conducted by Mr. Kurt Hermansen, former light designer of National Theatre and Sami National Theatre, Norway. The workshop was aimed to increase knowledge of the participants about theoretical and practical aspects of modern light design for stage-plays by using computer programmes.
‘Acting Workshop’
The workshop on Acting held during the period July 22 – August 5, 2000 with participation of 22 performers of CAT Repertory. Planned as a preparatory programme for CAT’s ensuing production ‘Peer Chan’, an adaptation of Ibsen’s “Peer Gynt”, the workshop was conducted by Indra Lorentzen, a famous ballet artist and choreographer of Norway.
In the workshop, body movements and choreographs were developed and composed according to the planned visual line of the Peer Gynt production. The performers also acquired knowledge and skills in scenario shifting. The workshop also contributed significantly to perfection of movement in general.
Workshop on Sanskrit Theatre Acting Style
The workshop on “Sanskrit Theatre Acting Style” held at Indian Cultural Centre on the 3rd, 4th and 5th of December 1999. The workshop was conducted by Probir Guha, a prominent theatre practitioner from West Bengal. Twenty young theatre actors took part in the workshop which aimed at developing knowledge and skill about Sanskrit as well as traditional theatre in India.
Workshop on ‘Stage Photography’
CAT organised a seven-day workshop on ‘Stage Photography’ at DRIK Gallery, Dhaka, during the period 6-12 November 1999, under the project “Professional Theatre, Publications and Exchange Programmes” supported by the Royal Norwegian Embassy, Dhaka. The participants were provided with the training on the modern techniques and arts of stage photography including the methodology of how to use computer for working with pictures. Following the completion of the workshop, Dr. Shahidul Alam, Director to DRIK Gallery, distributed certificates to the participants.
Workshop on ‘Stage Direction’
CAT organised a seven-day workshop on “Stage Direction”, conducted by Haukur J. Gunnarsson, Artistic Director, Haalogaland Theatre, Tromsoe, Norway, during the period 8-11 and 13-15 December 1998. The workshop was participated by 20 young theatre directors, theatre students and designers. Mr. Gunnarsson shared his interesting directional experiences regarding methodology of stage direction in both Western and Asian theatre. This was a significant and positive initiative for development of theatre in the country. Certificates were distributed to the participants following the completion of the workshop.
Workshop on Ibsen’s Texts: Analysis and New Interpretations
CAT organised the workshop on “Ibsen’s Texts: Analysis and New Interpretations” in Dhaka on 19 and 20 December 1997. The workshop was directed by Professor Vigdis Ystad, Department of Scandinavian Studies and Comparative Literature, University of Oslo, Norway. Altogether 15 persons took part in the workshop among whom were college/university teachers of English literature and theatre departments, theatre critics, scholars and playwrights of Bangladesh.
Workshop on Reality and Illusions in Ibsen’s Plays
The workshop on “Reality and Illusions in Ibsen’s Plays” was organised by CAT in Dhaka on 19 and 20 December 1997, under direction of Associate Professor Erik Osterud, Nordic Institute, Arhus University, Denmark. The workshop was participated by 15 set and light designers and film and theatre directors of Bangladesh.
Workshop on Ibsen’s Characters
CAT organised the workshop on “Ibsen’s Characters” in Dhaka during the period 22-24 December 1997. Tamer Levent, President of Turkish State Theatre, Ankara, Turkey, directed the workshop which was participated by 15 theatre practitioners of Bangladesh as well as
3 observers.
Workshop on Women Characters in Ibsen’s Plays
The workshop on “Women Characters in Ibsen’s Plays” was organised by CAT during the period 22-24 December 1997, and was directed by Professor Rati Barthalomew, University of Delhi, India. Altogether 15 theatre and television actors and actresses.
Workshop on ‘Light Design’
CAT organised this workshop during 26 June–2 July, 1996, under the direction of Kurt Hermansen, Former Light Designer, National Theatre, Norway. Fifteen young light designers of the country were the participants of the workshop who learnt the modern techniques of light design. After completion of the workshop, Berit Fladby, former Charge de’ Affairs to the Royal Norwegian Embassy, Dhaka, distributed certificates to the participants.
Workshop on ‘Acting Style and Analysis’
Juni Dahr also conducted a workshop on ‘Acting Style and Analysis’ at Goethe Institut – Dhaka on 19 & 20 September, 1995. This workshop was participated by 50 theatre workers of the country. After completion of the workshop, the famous actor of the country Masud Ali Khan distributed certificates to the participants.
Workshop on ‘Puppet Making and Use of Puppet in Theatre’
In collaboration with the Swedish Institute, a workshop on ‘Puppet Making and Use of Puppet in Theatre’ held in Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet during 19 February – 2 March, 1995. The workshop was conducted by Bodil Goransson, Kalmar, Sweden.
Through participation in this workshop, 100 theatre workers of the country could know about various techniques and devices of making puppet and using the same in theatre productions. Alongside the workshop, CAT arranged for a theatrical performance for children, directed and performed by Bodil Goransson, at the British Council auditorium. About 500 children watched the performance.
